HAHAHAHA I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHERE TO START.

I'm just...SO thrilled with how this portrait turned out. I was going in one direction with it, but it wasn't working. It wasn't ENOUGH. So I went in another one, thinking the background too simple.

I can say now that at least I won't beat myself up concerning the background now, it looks a HELL of a lot more complex than I had originally thought it would be.

Presenting: Erik: The Phantom of the Opera.

In his 20’s.

First drawing I’ve ever done of him, and thanks to how much fun I had working on this, coming up with new ideas, going in different directions…it won’t be the last! Definitely not!

The guy presents a challenge that I find exhilarating to accept. One can only draw so many pretty flowers and beautiful maidens in ones life before well…it becomes a BORE.

Give me a challenge. Give me Erik. He could never be boring to draw.

Pretty things are boring indeed. I mean, how many flowers, butterflies and rainbows have I already seen!? One could make a polished painting full of happiness, but that's just not how life works. It has good and bad sides. It's ugly and beautiful, all at the same time. And Erik, well, he is just a living manifestation of this. In all his ugliness... he is the most beautiful man on earth, though not the... 'conventional' kind of beauty.
But who says beauty has to equal perfection? Erik is just the greatest imperfection and perfection combined into ONE person, which makes him more beautiful than a broad-shouldered athlete.

And anyone has to admit; he just is amazingly awesome to draw! All the details on his face, the out of the ordinary appearance... I NEVER tire of drawing him! And you did a GREAT, GREAT job! (double emphasis on 'great')
I also like how his somewhat stick-out-y ears give him a bit of a batlike, or gargoyle-ish, appearance, but that he still looks human. He looks like a broken man, and a monster at the same time, of which you could say, he is both. (though all monsters are relative. One could call a rat a monster, or a spider. Though neither are one, or maybe you could say everything CAN be 'a monster', depending on the situation and the viewpoint of the observer)
But anyway, I'm rambling, I'm rambling. Erik is very, very good in making me ramble about moral debates, etc. etc. most people get tired by it :/ so... sorry! It's stronger than myself! Anyway, GREAT drawing! It's truly A-MA-ZING! <3 I would fave it a thousand times and then still one time more if DA permitted me to!
